The Crossroads Theatre will soon be demolished to make room for a new high-rise building that will house several performance spaces.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — For more than 25 years, the Crossroads Theatre Company has entertained audiences in an old brick building on Livingston Avenue.

Now, the African-American theater group is preparing to say goodbye to its longtime home. Workers are slated to begin demolishing the building in April, making way for a sweeping new high-rise tower that will house performance spaces, offices and apartments.

But dedicated fans and newcomers alike have a chance to catch one more show at the old Crossroads Theatre.

Beginning March 9, the theater is scheduled to put on its last play, “Sarah Sings a Love Story,” in the performance space. The run includes a number of shows through March 26, according to an announcement from Crossroads.

The play, which includes music, is inspired by the life and art of Sarah Vaughan, a “legendary” singer and pianist in America’s mid-20th-century jazz scene. She grew up in Newark in the 1920s and ‘30s but went on to take the world by storm.

“Sarah Sings a Love Story,” which was written by Stephanie Berry, is told through the lens of a devoted, middle-aged couple, from their early days together through their marriage, according to the theater company.

Tamar Davis, a former contestant on the TV show “The Voice,” plays Vaughan. The play also features Marva Hicks, a veteran performer from “Motown the Musical” and “The Lion King,” and Curtiss Cook, who was in the Netflix program “House of Cards.”

Once this season ends, Crossroads will become a transient troupe as construction takes place over the next two years. “Crossroads on the Road,” as the effort is called, will bring the theater company to a number of venues throughout New Jersey, according to the theater company.

The neighboring George Street Playhouse, which will also take up residence in the new building that sprouts from the Cultural Center redevelopment project, is expected to find a single temporary home during construction.

Officials plan for the new theater spaces to open by autumn 2019.

Tickets for Crossroads’ final season in its current space run from $25-45, according to the group. But tickets for opening night, March 11, cost $55 and include a reception.
