PISCATAWAY, NJ – It was slow going for many Piscataway commuters Thursday morning as overnight rains brought heavy flooding issues along major thoroughfares, causing rush hour detours and delays.
Police officials issued multiple travel alerts via the SwiftReach Networks with road closures at South Randolphville and Sidney Roads, and along Possumtown Road from the Middlesex Boro border to the Route 287 underpass due to flooding. They advised motorists to use caution when traveling throughout the township and to seek alternate routes.
Several fender benders were reported along detoured routes which remained congested through at least 9 am.
Some Piscataway schools waived late charges for students as buses and teachers called-in to report they were not able to quickly get through the heavy traffic.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40% chance of more showers and possible thunderstorms later in the day.
