Franklin Township: New Jersey Orators will host Annual Awards and Scholarship Fundraiser

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ - The New Jersey Orators 'the voice of New Jersey' will host its annual awards and scholarship fundraiser at Franklin high school, May 20.

The New Jersey Orators (NJO) Inc., is a non-profit 501(C) 3 youth organization that teaches the art of public speaking, an appreciation for literature, reading and media arts literacy, college readiness and life skills to youth from seven to eighteen years of age in preparation for college, according to its website. 

"NJO partners with the Franklin Township School District in order to enhance the educational services offered to our township youth," Somerset Chapter President Eloise Samuels said to TAPinto Franklin Township. "However, there is no other community youth organization offering public speaking oratorical and literacy program in Somerset County."

This year NJO's scholarship fundraiser will host its first ever community forum. 

Youth Challenges 'Make Healthy Decisions' is the name of this year's forum and Author and CEO of 'Painting Pictures: Reframing the World of Inner-City Youth' Corey D. James, will be the keynote speaker. 

Community forum with panel discussion will feature the following:

  • Harold D. Brown, Newark Teacher
  • Reginald Johnson, NAACP – Metuchen –Edison Branch
  • Dr. Jacqueline Moore, Administrator Rutgers STEM Program
  • Hema Patel, Counselor, Middlesex Community College
  • Luis Marius, Administrator, Middlesex Community College
  • Quovella Spruill, Chief of Detectives – Essex County
  • Dr. Yolanda Rogers, Professor & Psychologist
  • Rutgers University – Black Students Union
  • The New Jersey & Pennsylvania Orators

The Somerset Chapter of the NJO partners with the Franklin Township Public School District for an after-school program in which it utilizes the space for its programs.

The district provides the Somerset NJO program with classroom and auditorium space for weekly meetings and quarterly competitions. 

The Somerset Chapter holds weekly oratorical practices at Sampson G. Smith School starting in September and continues through June following the school calendar. 

"We hold two fall competitions in December and two spring competitions at the end of April," Samuels said. "We offer the Beyond High School Educational Conference and workshops in the fall and spring where we offer educational workshops in College Readiness Planning, Pre-College Programs, Financial Literacy: Maximizing Academic Resources, and FAFSA workshops.
