GMCT Softball: North Brunswick Raiders Top Piscataway Lady Chiefs, 18-1 in Preliminary Round

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ -- The Piscataway High School varsity softball team got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second inning, but everything was down from there.

Highlighted by an eight-run surge in the bottom half of the second to take a six-run lead at that point, the 14th-seeded North Brunswick Raiders topped the 19th-seeded Lady Chiefs, 18-1, in the preliminary round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon in North Brunswick.

Kayla Scher went 3-for-4 including a home run with three RBI and three runs scored while Alyssa Contreras smacked a home run and a single herself driving in four along way while scoring three runs for North Brunswick, which plays third-seeded Sayreville in the next round.

Katrina Lauri finished with two more hits in four tries with four RBI and two runs scored while Mia Santiago and Lauren Duffy tallied two hits as well for the Raiders. Cassidie Speed also cranked a two-RBI double in the second inning.

From the circle, Tara Jennings worked her magic throwing a five inning four-hitter allowing one run and one walk while striking out three. She also totaled two RBI at the plate as well.

North Brunswick outhit Piscataway 13-4.

As for the Chiefs, Molly VanderHorn went 1-for-2 with an RBI, driving in Carly Bressler for the lone run. Jessica Alicea, Taylor Maher, and Gabriella Posada picked up hits as well.
