UNION, NJ – Kean University freshman soccer player, Vinceroy Nelson has been named 2017 Rookie of the Year by the New Jersey Athletic Conference, earning a spot on the second team of the conference’s All-NJU team, announced officials in a Friday news release.
Nelson, a Piscataway resident who plays forward on the university’s men’s soccer team is the first student-athlete in the program to win the title in 20 years, said officials.
The Cougars’ player tallied 17 points during the fall season, scoring eight goals and one assist, including two game-winners making him the fifth player in program history and the first since 1997 to be awarded with the honor, said officials.
“Vinceroy has a natural eye for the goal and this isn’t something that every player has,” said head coach Peter-John Falloon. “This proves that hard work will always pay off. If you want to be successful, you have to go the extra mile.”
“Many talented soccer players where I’m from fail to get the recognition they deserve,” said Nelson, a native of Saint Kitts and Nevis who hopes to one day play the sport on the professional level. “I just hope my success helps restore the faith of those young players.”
