PISCATAWAY, NJ – It was a busy day for Piscataway girls sports teams on Thursday with volleyball and soccer posting big wins as they celebrated their seniors on Senior Night while field hockey, tennis, and gymnastics fell to their opponents.
Over on the volleyball court in the Patton building, the Lady Chiefs continued their winning season with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Edison Eagles bringing their record to 13-3. C. Dalton led with 2 kills, 1 block, 1 dig, 12 assists and 7 aces.
At Dominic R. Ciardi field, Ashley Merizalde scored both goals for Piscataway as the girls varsity soccer shutout J.P. Stevens, 2-0 taking the Chiefs’ record to 4-8-1. JV teammates Reanna Garrett and Ava Farmer put in a goal apiece in that team’s 2-1 win earlier in the day over the Hawks.
Field hockey traveled to Metuchen but was stopped at the goal with their loss to the Bulldogs, 4-0. Chiefs’ goalies, Abigail Zamor recorded 12 saves while Alicia Weyer logged 5. The team’s record moves to 1-13 for the season.
Girls tennis slides to 4-14 with their 4-1 loss to Edison at home. Piscataway’s Jordyn Cho and Sydney Cho took on the Eagles’ Padmoja Gopalam and Ishani Kunadharaju in doubles match to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
In gymnastics, the Chiefs’ Jenna Engels led in points scoring versus Old Bridge, with an all-around score of 34.25. Engels reached the top of the leaderboard with her routines on the beam and floor exercise, placing third in the bars. Gianna Rovito scored 8.6 in the vault.
However, it wasn’t enough to take the Chiefs to victory as they lost to the Knights, 101.5-98.675.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ boys soccer took on South Brunswick at Green Acres Field falling 2-0 to send their overall record to 9-4-1.
On Friday, Piscataway football will take to the field for homecoming versus North Brunswick. The Class of ’69 will be honored during pre-game activities.
