NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A New Brunswick man will serve life in prison for stalking and fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend back in 2015, authorities announced on Jan. 18.

On June 24, Giver Quiroz-Vasquez, 28 of New Brunswick, pursued his ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old New Brunswick resident Alicia Martinez-Izaguirr, by car, before killing her at her place of employment, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said.

Vasquez, who also goes by the names of Gilberto Juarez-Vasques and Erick Morales Sandin, was convicted of murder, stalking and weapons charges on Oct. 4, 2017.

He was issued a life sentence for murder by Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Pedro J. Jimenez, Jr., Carey said.

Vasquez’s sentences for the stalking and weapons charges were merged into his life imprisonment, which will be served at a New Jersey state prison, Carey said.

He’s also been issued a no-contact-order against the family of the victim, Carey said.

Assistant Prosecutors Bina Desai and Simret Michael brought the case against Vasquez.

Vaques took his friend’s 2004 silver Volkswagen Passat, without their permission, prosecutors said, in order to stalk her.

On the morning of the incident, Vasquez followed Izaguirr as she left her new boyfriend's house for work, then shot at her when she stopped at a Dunkin Donuts, prosecutor’s said.

Izaguirr was able to escape the Dunkin Donuts parking lot, but she was pursued by Vasquez to her place of work at 241 Docks Corner Road in South Brunswick, Carey said.

There, Vasquez, where he walked up to her car window and shot her twice in the head before fleeing, authorities said.

The Volkswagen was later found abandoned, police said.

Following an investigation between the South Brunswick Police and county prosecutor's office, Vasquez was traced the next day to New Hope, PA, arrested and held at the Middlesex County Jail with $2 million bail.

He pleaded not guilty to the murder charges days after the shooting. During the trial, on June 30, Assistant Prosecutor Scott LaMountain told Superior Court Judge Alberto Rivas that the two had a "tumultuous relationship."

Despite his life imprisonment, Vasquez received jail credit for the 973 days he’ll be incarcerated, between June 27, 2015 and July 17, 2018, authorities said.
