Locals' Tips Help EBPD to Solve Crime

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - One of several local media outlets to circulate this notice, TAPinto East Brunswick alone received 3,802 Facebook "hits" and 21 shares on a recent local story involving a driver leaving the scene of an accident.  According to the East Brunswick Police Department, tips from the local public helped them to solve a case in which a young man from the township was injured.  The internet can sometimes be a dark place, but it can also help to turn the light on for some police investigations.

As reported by TAPinto East Brunswick, a 17-year-old male was jogging south on Old Bridge Turnpike on March 16, 2017 around 9:54 pm when he was struck by an unknown vehicle from behind.  After the victim was thrown to the ground,  the suspect vehicle fled the scene without stopping.  Responding officers located the victim who was not seriously injured.  Patrol units recovered a broken off portion of a front passenger-side bumper at the scene of the accident.

Detective Michael Smith, Detective John Breen  and Patrolman James Angermeier of the East Brunswick Investigative Division and Special Operations Divisions continued the investigation and were able to identify the specific make, model and approximate year of the suspect vehicle.  It was a champagne- or gold-colored Dodge Intrepid, manufactured between 1998 and 2004.  Information regarding the suspect vehicle was published last week via print and online media outlets in an attempt to identify the suspect vehicle. Details also circulated on Facebook and other social media sites.

On March 30, 2017, members of the Investigative Division and Special Operations Division located the suspect vehicle and interviewed the driver Stefanie Susinno, 33, of South River.   Susinno was charged with Assault by Auto and Endangering an Injured Person.  Susinno was also issued numerous motor vehicle violations including Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Failure to Report.

Chief James Conroy and the East Brunswick Police Department credited the public’s response by helping to identify the suspect vehicle last week:  "The numerous tips the department received were critical in solving this hit and run accident."
