EDISON, NJ — Shaun Mehtani, owner of Moghul Restaurant and Ming Restaurant—both in Edison, described the type of cuisine served at each of the restaurants. “Moghul offers northern Indian food, also known as Punjabi, from India's northwestern frontier.”
He explained Ming’s food, “It’s Indochinese, from the border of India and China. People near the border have blended their food for centuries. It’s southwestern Indian food.”
Since late June, the two restaurants have shared an outdoor dining area, and patrons can order items from both menus. Shaun said, “It’s like a combination restaurant now.”
Shaun noted, “We have a phenomenal outdoor dining set up… enjoy it while the weather is so nice.”
He reported that he is extremely dedicated to keeping his customers healthy. The outdoor tables are ten feet apart (rather than the required six). They take customers’ temperatures when they arrive, and everyone’s contact information (even outdoor guests) is recorded if contact tracing is necessary.
His uncle in India passed away from COVID last week, so Shaun’s especially determined to protect his patrons and his team. The restaurant management is focusing on cleanliness and following all protocols, even going beyond CDC rules.
Per state mandate, Mohgol’s and Ming’s indoor dining areas can be filled to 25% occupancy. Take out, delivery, and curbside pick up are available.
Shaun shared that his parents opened the establishments “20 and 30 years ago, respectively, when the big Indian and south Asian boom was just starting.”
The Mehtani family’s restaurant history dates back to 1983 when Shaun’s mother, Sneh, operated the first of the family’s restaurants in Manhattan. “The Moghul Room” was located inside New York City’s Pennsylvania Hotel.
According to the Mehtani Restaurant website, Sneh had no “industry-specific knowledge” and “learned on her feet as she put together a remarkable group of chefs and gained respect from her customers and industry professionals alike.”
She asked her husband, Satish, to help her expand the business by opening an Indian restaurant in Edison in 1990. They named it Moghul Restaurant and served fine Indian cuisine.
Moghul Restaurant’s delicious dishes made it a popular destination, so they opened Ming Restaurant next door ten years later.
Their website says, “The Mehtani Restaurant Group became famous not only for its Indian offerings, but also for its Asian restaurants, trendsetting cocktails, beautiful banquet hall, and premiere off-premise catering services.”
In 2013 Sneh won the prestigious New Jersey Restaurant and Hospitality Association’s Restaurateur of the Year Award.
Having operated restaurants for 30 years, Sneh and Satish decided it was time to retire, and Shaun took over the businesses. His objective is to continue his parents’ legacy of high caliber restaurants.
Since assuming control of the business, he has launched Mehndi (north Indian cuisine), Ming II, and SM23 (a creative cocktail bar) in Morristown.
Both Edison restaurants are open from noon to 9:00 p.m. every day except Mondays.
