NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A suspect arrested in connection with a fatal shooting of a New Brunswick man will remain behind bars for now, after the courts determined he was a public safety threat and flight risk.

The suspect, 26-year-old Newark resident Michael Martin, also known as “Maniac,” appeared in front of  Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Michael A. Toto on November 17 for a detention hearing, according to a statement from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

Martin was arrested on October 23 in Philadelphia for his alleged connection in the fatal shooting of New Brunswick man back in August.

The victim, 31-year-old Hakim Williams, was found shot to death inside his car on Fulton Street on August 18. A neighbor called police after hearing gunshots, authorities said. Shortly after they arrived, at 11:03 p.m., Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the November 17 detention hearing, Assistant Prosecutor Bina Desai argued that Martin was a flight risk and danger to the community, according to authorities.

Another suspect in the case, 31-year-old Newark resident Rayshawn Riddick, was arrested on September 14 by members of the FBI Task Force, New Brunswick police and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, according to authorities.

Martin and Riddick were both charged on August 29 with one count of murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree and possession of  weapon for unlawful purposes in the second degree.
