PISCATAWAY, NJ - Over 150 high schools students and spectators came to see 20 different teams from Piscataway, Franklin Township and the surrounding area to help "Spike out Hunger" at Theodore Schor Middle School on Feb. 12.

"I hope this event enables us to make a nice monetary and food donation today," Mitch Fuhr, the Kiwanis advisor for Franklin-Somerset said.

Over $700 and more than 150 cans were collected at New Jersey Key Club's third annual District Spike Out Hunger Tournament. All proceeds went to the New Jersey Federation of Food Banks.

"We have twenty-two different [Key Club] districts in New Jersey and they partner up in twos and run a divisional tournament in their area, so we've had about 10 tournaments this year," Kaitlin McCann said. "We invite all of the winners and anybody else that wants to play to this culminating event."

The Franklin-Somerset Kiwanis club assisted with hosting the event. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to serving children within their communities. Key Clubs assist the Kiwanis in carrying out their mission while providing high school students with valuable leadership skills.

"I think today's game was a really valuable experience for me, I got to meet a lot of new people that are also Key Club members like me," Jalani Massicot said. "It was joyful to see just how big this organization really is."

Skill levels of the participants varied, but that did not matter, because "this game is for your enjoyment and for charity, skill is optional," a promotional flyer said. To participate each player had to bring $5 to play, or they could bring two cans and $3 instead. Each team had to have at least five players, but most of them had more.

"If you are passionate about community service this is definitely a great opportunity to network and find out about other community organizations," Janelle Thomas, Circle K Key Club member said. "I have gotten the chance to meet a lot of like-minded people by belonging to the Key Club organization." is an online newspaper serving the Township of Piscataway.
