NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A registered nurse has been arrested on sexual assault charges allegedly involving two different patients in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s emergency room, according to an announcement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and New Brunswick’s police director.

Wilber Hernandez, 29, of Perth Amboy, was arrested today, July 13, and charged with four counts of sexual assault.

He’s facing one count of second-degree sexual assault and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual assault stemming from an alleged attack last month against a 74-year-old woman in the emergency room, authorities said.

Hernandez was also charged with one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual account and lewdness, which is a disorderly persons offense. Cops said those charges resulted from an Oct. 13, 2016 incident involving a 49-year-old woman who was also a patient.

Robert Wood Johnson has suspended the alleged assailant without pay, pending the outcome of his legal case, according to the hospital.

“We are fully committed to providing a safe environment for our patients, visitors and staff,” hospital spokesperson Peter Haigney said in a statement sent to TAPinto New Brunswick. “Our administration and staff are working in full cooperation with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.”

The spokesperson declined to comment further, citing the active police investigation and patient privacy.

Hernandez has worked for Robert Wood Johnson since last July, according to police.

He was also suspended from his jobs at Saint Peter’s University Hospital—also in New Brunswick—and the North Brunswick-based Maxim Healthcare Services, the prosecutor’s office said. The exact capacity of his work there is unclear.

A spokesperson for Saint Peter’s said the hospital doesn’t comment on employees’ legal issues.

Prior to coming to New Brunswick, Hernandez worked as a registered nurse at Jersey City Medical Hospital, Hackensack Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, all in North Jersey, according to cops.

Det. Erika DiMarcello of the New Brunswick Police Department and Det. Oscar Ayala of the prosecutor’s office are leading the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding Hernandez and the ongoing investigation should call DiMarcello at 732-745-5200 or Ayala at 732-745-3600.

Hernandez is currently at the Middlesex County Adult Correction in North Brunswick.
