One Dead in Westfield House Fire Monday Morning

WESTFIELD, NJ — (updated at 12:40 p.m.) A male in his late teens is dead after a fire in the early hours of Monday morning tore through a home in Westfield, according to Fire Chief David Kelly. The victim's name has not been released. Two family members we able to escape, he said.

The home is located on the 1200 block of Prospect Street.
Firefighters got the call at 2:46 a.m. When they arrived, they encountered heavy fire conditions on the first floor, Kelly said. He said they immediately began to attack the fire and began rescue operations.
 
"It took two hours to get the fire under control," Kelly said. "At the height of the fire, there were over 50 firefighters from Union County on the scene working to bring the fire under control"
 

The young man who died had been trapped on the second floor, Kelly said.
 
The house was heavily damaged in the fire, which burned through the roof, he said.
