PISCATAWAY, NJ – A mid-afternoon fire at the Canterbury at Piscataway complex in the township resulted in extensive damage to the exterior of one of the condominium buildings on Tuesday.
No information was immediately available as to the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage, how many condos were affected or if there were any injuries.
One resident, who declined to give her name said she was told to evacuate because the condo behind hers was on fire, and that there was a lot of fire. She said she and her friend had been sitting curbside for several hours while fire crews worked to put out the blaze and did not know the condition of her unit.
Piscataway Police issued a traffic alert at about 2:40 p.m. that Birch Run Drive between Sewell Ave. and Lackland Ave. was closed for fire department activity.
Fire and rescue units from New Market, Arbor, Holmes Marshall and North Stelton were among the responding squads, along with personnel from the Middlesex Twp. Fire Department, the Middlesex County Fire Marshall’s office and PSEG.
The fire remains under investigation.
