PISCATAWAY, NJ — As Piscataway boys and girls basketball gear up for season opener games January 28 under COVID-19 mandates and restrictions, Superintendent Dr. Frank Ranelli says the school district looks forward to the start of winter sports even though there will be new guidelines to follow.
“The NJSIAA is the governing body over athletics for high schools in New Jersey”, Ranelli explained during a taped interview with Mayor Brian Wahler on PCTV’s “Eye on Piscataway” program.
“They continue to put out rules and regulations and dates for returns,” he said. “As you know, we did not participate in fall athletics, but we are planning to participate in winter athletics. There’re different dates for different returns to participate. All high school families are aware and know of the dates.”
Boys and girls basketball, and bowling began practicing Monday (Jan. 18), with their first matchups for the 2020-2021 school year set for next week. Cheerleading began Jan. 11.
Swimming and winter track begin their seasons with practice at the new Piscataway YMCA Community Center February 1, and wrestling will begin March 1.
All will have condensed seasons with a lot of rules in place, social distancing, and rules about when to wear masks and how many people can be in the gym.
“Our hope is to continue to move forward and participate,” said Ranelli.
“I’m sure the athletes are going to be happy to get back into the swing of things,” said Wahler.
“And so are we,” answered Ranelli. “We want to give these kids as many experiences as we can, whether it be athletics or extracurriculars. We have a lot of extracurricular clubs that are being held virtually while the kids can’t be in person.
“We’re trying our best to give the kids experiences they’re used to, and they want,” he said. “We’re looking forward to their being able to compete.”
