SPOTSWOOD, NJ – LaNiya Miller scored 13 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter to help push the second-seeded Piscataway High School girls varsity basketball team over third-seeded Bishop Ahr, 65-54, in the semifinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Monday night at Spotswood High School.

The Chiefs return to the GMCT final for the first time in three years. They will take on fifth-seeded Edison on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.

“LaNiya played great and knocked down some big shots,” head coach Chris Puder said. “She’s a senior that didn’t want to lose.”

Yamirah Bennett, who finished with 13 points on the night, made six clutch free throws for Piscataway, which eventually outscored Bishop Ahr from the free-throw line, 17-15, after the Chiefs got into early foul trouble.

Bishop Ahr trimmed Piscataway’s double-digit, 11-point lead down to six at 56-50 with 1:27 left to play, but on back-to-back possessions, Bennett went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to put the Chiefs up 59-52.

Piscataway kept its energy up despite a tussle in the third quarter between Baiylee Barnes and Elyssa Jackson which resulted in technical fouls being called on both players. The Trojans’ Emma Boslet also scored her 1,000th point in the third which caused a delay.

Miller chipped in with seven boards as well while Saniya Myers scored 11 points and had five rebounds for Piscataway. Ariel Jenkins tallied eight points and rebounds.

For Bishop Ahr, Boslet and Sara Decker recorded double-doubles. Boslet registered 23 points and 10 rebounds and Decker posted 16 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Herka also added 13 points.

As mentioned, the Chiefs return to the RAC and will bring tradition with them. Piscataway won three straight GMCT titles from 2013-15.

Piscataway beat the Eagles twice this season already.

“Edison is a team that is peaking at the right time,” said Puder. “Very good team. We are going to have to play at our best if we want to the bring the championship home.”
