Mediha Sandhu

About Me: I grew up in Bayonne, NJ before moving to Piscataway. I am an MFA Candidate, and works in the arts field. As a proud Pakistani-American, and a small business owner, I come from a large diverse family, and am interested in contemporary issues. I have been an active part of SMILE, a charity in Passaic NJ that offers food pantry as well as diapers, medical health supplies and more for its immediate community.

What I stand for: Progress in Piscataway is necessary and only new leaders will foster positive change. As a new leader I will be able to better represent the values and opinions of my community. Our neighborhoods deserve investment in local businesses and recreation such as an accessible and affordable community center. Overall I feel as though my point of view as a Pakistani-American puts me in a unique situation in which I can correctly represent our diverse community.

Why I am running: I love the diversity of my Piscataway community and want to represent my neighbors and friends as a Committeewoman in Ward 2, District 2. I will work to ensure that issues and concerns are addressed promptly and respectfully, and all voices are heard. I wish to confront intolerance and ignorance with dialogue and challenge stereotypes within the community, to help foster and encourage Piscataway to grow and benefit from its rich heterogeneity.

About Me: I have been a Piscataway resident for the past 30 years. My wife Abigail and I have been married for 34 years and have three children ages 30, 28, and 25. Abigail holds a Master's degree in Education from the University of Connecticut and is an early childhood education author and teacher. All of my children attended Piscataway Public Schools pre-K through High School, graduating in 2004, 2007, and 2009 respectively. After High School they all attended Rutgers University. I am very proud to serve my community as a member of the Board of Education. I’m a former Soccer Club coach, referee, and executive board member, Little League coach, Township Recreation Middle School Basketball coach, High School Athletic Booster Club member, High School Grading Policy Committee member, and High School Superchief Band Parents Association equipment crew and executive board member.

What I stand for: I am currently a member of the Piscataway Township Open Space Committee and a former member of the Environmental Advisory Committee. Therefore making Piscataway a green community is a very important issue to me. Open space needs to be preserved and irresponsible development stopped. Piscataway should adopt a Clean Air ordinance and a bulk purchase plan for renewable energy.

Why I am running: I ran for and won election to County Committee as a Progressive Democrat in 2017 and hope to do so for a second time this year. The Democratic County Committee chooses which candidates get which line during elections and therefore the committee members have the most important positions. It would be an honor to represent Ward 2 District 2 as a committee member to ensure that the neighborhood feels properly represented and heard.
