PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway residents have reported seeing bears in and around town over the last few months, most often describing one as approximately 100 pounds and about a year old.

“I think since he seems to like living in our community we should have a naming contest,” said Mayor Brian C. Wahler. “It doesn’t seem right to continue to call him just Bear.

“Maybe he knows it’s our 350th anniversary and wants in on the celebration,” he added.

Anyone who wants to submit a name for the ‘new resident’ can email suggestions to public.info@piscatawaynj.org.

The 350th Anniversary committee will choose the name from the submissions and the winner will be featured in the fall issue of Piscataway News. Deadline for entries is Wednesday, July 6.

Residents are reminded to keep all garbage cans well secured and out of reach of wildlife. To report a bear sighting, call the Piscataway Police Department at 732-562-1100, or the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Wildlife Control at 908-735-8793.
