PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway school officials posted an announcement on the district’s website alerting the community about security and safety measures being taken to protect students and staff from potential threats.

The statement comes in the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida where 17 students and staff members at a high school were shot and killed by an alleged gunman.

The Feb.15 post began with a statement about school safety and how the district fosters a welcoming learning environment.

“In light of yesterday’s tragic event in Parkland, Fl, we want all Piscataway families to know our safety and security measures and know we take them seriously in every school,” officials said in the post.

“Most essential to keeping our children safe at school is a welcoming school environment combined with relationships built between students, families, and staff. It is of vital importance that students feel a connection to their school, and that parents feel welcomed and involved.

“All of our schools have counselors and a behaviorist on staff, and The Haven, an on-site mental health facility at PHS, is available to assist all district students in need of comprehensive counseling.”

The post continued, describing security measures being taken in the district’s schools.

“All schools have magnetic locking doors and video cameras with intercom/buzz-in systems,” said officials. “Doors are locked at all times and all visitors must sign in and out.

“PHS has almost 200 cameras throughout the school and camps. Staff include 11 trained security guards and a fulltime School Resource Officer from the Piscataway Police Department. School Resource Officers are also based at our middle schools. Staff is regularly reminded of safety procedures through regular staff meetings, professional development and safety drills.

“Please know that your children’s safety is, and will continue to be, our most important charge. Thank you for supporting our efforts.”
