NEW YORK – Piscataway’s Mohammed Ahmed, an incoming freshman at Rutgers University has received’s Open Enrollment Scholarship, one of two insurance scholarships awarded by the company, officials announced on Friday.

This is the first time the company, a health insurance comparison website has awarded scholarships, they said in a news release.

Scholarships “are available to students who are at landmark ages for getting health insurance, either turning 26 or experiencing ACA open enrollment for the first time,” said company officials. “They do not need to have a background in medicine or insurance.”

According to company officials, Mohammed is well on his way to becoming a doctor, having just graduated from the Middlesex County Academy of Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences last spring, and qualifying for the Rutgers Oncology Olympiad.

Mohammed’s Open Enrollment Scholarship is for students who are 17-19 years-old. Applicants were asked to discuss their experiences with health insurance.

In his essay, Mohammed wrote about getting treatment for his broken arm from an injury in gym class, and described his internship experiences with doctors’ offices and volunteer work at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.

“I was surprised to see all the different types of insurance programs available for people to choose from,” Mohammed wrote. He plans to enroll in the Rutgers University Honors Program in the fall semester.

The second insurance scholarship was awarded to postbaccalaureate, Monica Renoj of Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles. Monica won the Health Insurance Scholarship for students aged 25 to 26.

Mohammed and Monica were selected from dozens of competitive applicants across 10 states who applied online to receive the inaugural scholarship awards, according to the news release.

“Congratulations to these two outstanding students!” says co-founder Jeff Smedsrud.

“Since they’ve already met the challenge of getting health insurance as a student, we know their future is exceptionally bright,” Smedsrud added.
