MAPLEWOOD, NJ -  Chief Jim DeVaul issued a press release advising of an incident that occurred at the location of General Movers, at 228 Burnett Avenue, where it was reported about 7:14 p.m. that a disgruntled employee of that company discharged a firearm at his manager/Boss and left the scene.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male wearing a blue, General Movers shirt, carrying a black bag and had left the location on foot. Officers located and detained a person matching that description nearby on Florida Street, Maplewood. This person was identified as the person involved in the incident. During the investigation it was discovered that the suspect had discarded the handgun as he fled. Patrol Officers recovered a .22 caliber revolver near where the suspect was stopped.

The press release noted that at this time there are no reported injuries, and it is undetermined how many shots were fired.

The release further noted that this is an ongoing investigation therefor the name and charges are withheld and will be released at the appropriate time.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. Friday, September 13 Chief DeVaul issued an update to the workplace incident:

"The Actor is identified as 38-year-old Andres Antonio Vela-Ruiz of Plainfield, NJ. 

The following charges have been authorized by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office:

Possession of a weapon,

Possession of a weapon for a unlawful purpose & Aggravated assault."

All charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
