SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – A driver’s dash-cam video caught the moment when a 21-year-old Hamilton man, who police say was distracted while driving on Route 1 during rush hour, almost crossed the highway into oncoming traffic.

Instead, he hit the concrete barrier between the north and southbound lanes and only suffered minor injuries, according to police.

The accident took place during rush hour Wednesday night on Route 1 south near Deans lane, police said.

The driver became distracted, crashing his 2001 PT Cruiser into the concrete barrier between the lanes and going up on two wheels.

Luckily, the car came back down on four wheels and he could get to the righthand shoulder of the road, where the car then became disabled, police said.

Crews took the driver to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was treated for a shoulder injury, police said.

A northbound vehicle with a permanently installed dash-cam aught the frightening moments on video when the PT Cruiser started veering left toward oncoming traffic and then striking the barrier.

“Distracted driving is the leading cause of crashes in the state. This incident was captured on video and it highlights the dangers,” Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka said. “If the driver had not struck the impact attenuator at the intersection, he would have crossed directly into northbound traffic. Drivers need to remember their focus needs to be on the roadway at all times.”

An investigation of the crash is still pending.
