SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Southside Clam Bar & Restaurant will host its official grand opening celebration on Saturday, Sept. 9 and in honor of the event the New Market Avenue establishment will be pouring out and serving up half price alcoholic drinks from 4 to 10 p.m.

“I am very excited to be here and feel we bring something new and different that wasn't here before,” said Southside owner and South Plainfield native Alexis Broehl. “There are a lot of Italian restaurants and so many Chinese and pizza places here, we aren’t the same old thing. We are a true asset to this town; there was nothing like us here before.”

Broehl, who previously owned Muscle Maker Grill in the Middlesex Mall, purchased the former Liquid Assets site last August and spent much of the next eight months renovating the restaurant from top to bottom before opening the doors to Southside back in April. Open Tuesday through Sunday, the restaurant features a casual décor, an open-kitchen with a brick oven, family-friendly atmosphere, and full bar stocked with top shelf liquor.

“We are very family-oriented and offer a casual atmosphere and want people to feel comfortable coming straight from work or with their kids, and feel, when they come here, like that they are at home eating,” said Broehl, who is on site daily, usually with her 5-month old son in tow. “We want people to have an enjoyable experience and want to come back.”

Southside boasts a raw bar along with an extensive seafood menu that includes all fresh, never frozen, items. “The seafood is delivered fresh every week. We never froze it,” Broehl said, noting that signature dishes include halibut, lobster, seafood fra diavolo, seafood salad, shrimp scampi, and seared scallops, to name a few, as well as raw oysters and clams oreganato.

For those looking for options other than seafood, restaurant offers also offers a variety of beef, pork, chicken, and pasta dishes as well as salads and create-your-own brick oven pizza all prepared by Southside’s professional and experienced chefs. There are daily dinner specials as well as every day menu items, including specialty pork shops, veal parmigana, New York strip steak, and more.

Additionally, the restaurant also features a kid’s menu as well as a variety of appetizers, including long hot peppers and homemade crab cakes, and various desserts and specialty coffees.

According to Broehl, one of the things that sets Southside apart is that all dishes can be specialized, with substitutions and special requests welcome.

“If you’re not a seafood person or you want something you see on the menu switched up, we will gladly do it,” she said, adding, “Here, it is whatever you like and we want people to have an enjoyable experience and want to come back.”

Southside is also available for private parties and will be offering special discounts for police/EMT/fire personnel as well as to Rutgers students. Additionally, the restaurant takes reservations, will work to accommodate large groups, and will prepare food for take out.

“Our goal is to have people come here, feel comfortable and want to come back again,” Broehl said, adding that, overall, she hopes diners will see past what the establishment once was.

“I hope people will get the idea of what this place used to be out of their minds and have an open mind to coming in and seeing what we are all about. Yes, it was liquid assets but that was the past. It’s done and gone,” she said. “We truly are something different, something new, something different that South Plainfield hasn't had before.”

Southside Clam Bar & Restaurant, located at 118 New Market Avenue at the corner of Hamilton Boulevard, is open Tuesday-Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. The restaurant is available for private parties and accepts reservations. Why are you running for election to the Piscataway Township Council?

I am running for election to the Piscataway Township Council because I believe that a vibrant democracy only flourishes when the governed have a voice in their government, be it in the form of compromise, protest, or even becoming viable candidates themselves. Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
