SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - Police say the suspect involved in a Tuesday afternoon assault on a detective turned himself in due to pressure from law enforcement and tips on social media from the public.

Alan Fratello Jr of Monmouth Junction turned himself in at 12:20 pm Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

"He knew we were going to track him down, it was just a matter of hours. Family members had reached out to detectives because they saw the media reports about him being wanted. He had no option but to surrender," said Chief Hayducka.

Hayducka thanked the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, Edison Police, Toms River Police and South Amboy Police for all the assistance they provided, according to an alert sent out by police.

According to police Fratello Jr. was driving with Jaqueline Smith, age 41 of Monmouth Junction when he grabbed Detective Eric Tighelaar’s tie during a traffic stop and began driving away, forcing Detective Tighelaar to run alongside the vehicle.

Tighelaar began pushing himself off of Fratello Jr’s vehicle and was able to break free, police say.

Police say Fratello Jr and Smith were already wanted by other police agencies for unrelated offenses and Fratello Jr had no valid drivers license.

As a result of the incident, Fratello Jr has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and eluding, police say.

He was also charged with numerous motor vehicle violations, according to police. Fratello Jr is lodged at the Middlesex County Correction Center pending his first court appearance.

Smith remains at large and has active warrants for her.
