SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – A special ribbon cutting ceremony and preview tour of the new World Class ShopRite of South Plainfield was held Nov. 1. The store, which is operated by Keasbey-based Saker Shoprite, Inc. and located in the Golden Acres shopping center on Oak Tree Road, officially opened to the public this morning at 7 a.m.

Four members of the South Plainfield High School Chorus kicked off Tuesday’s event with a performance of the National Anthem and then Mayor Matt Anesh and Senator Patrick Diegnan, Jr. (D-18) joined Saker ShopRite representatives to cut the ribbon on the new store. Invited guests, including officials from the borough and school district and members of several other community groups and organizations, were then welcomed inside for a reception and tour of the state-of-the-art 80,000-square-foot supermarket.

“This is something the community has been anticipating for a very long time and talking about for the past year. It is a huge benefit to the town and everyone is going to see what all the buzz is about,” said Anesh.

Saker ShopRite, Inc. was established in 1916 as a small corner grocery store and today remains a family-owned company run by third and fourth generation grocers. The opening of the South Plainfield supermarket marks the company’s 31 store and the first in the borough.

“We are celebrating our 100th anniversary and it seems fitting that we are celebrating it with the opening of this South Plainfield store,” said Richard Saker, the company’s president and COO. “We have a strong presence in New Jersey and, up until now, when it came to ShopRite, there was a void in this area.

The South Plainfield store boasts a pharmacy, in-store café, a Dunkin Donuts, a specialty cigar shoppe, and a full-service catering department as well as a from-scratch bakeshop; a meat department with trained butchers; a full-service seafood department; a floral shop; and a full service deli department. Additionally, hot entrees, sushi, a cold buffet, a Mediterranean olive bar, made-to-order sandwiches, and cheeses from around the world as well as a large selection of fresh produce and natural and organic products are available.

“Our variety is great, we have a tremendous selection of all the organic products that people want today, and we have club sizes and club pricing with no membership fee,” said Saker, adding, “And we have Dunkin Donuts.”

The South Plainfield store also offers ShopRite from Home, the convenient online shopping service through which supermarket associates personally shop and package online grocery orders that customers can either pick up at the store or have delivered to their doorstep. Additionally, there is a nutrition center with dietitian services offered free of charge and a culinary workshop that offers free chef-taught cooking classes.

“You always try to make the next store better than the one before and I feel we have accomplished that here,” added Saker, who also announced Tuesday that the company would be donating $10,000 to Community Food Bank of New Jersey. “Our promise is to offer the customer the best possible quality at the best possible price and to make every customer a satisfied customer. We also want to become a vital part of the community.”

Store manager Mike Egan, who previously ran the company’s East Brunswick store, said he is looking forward to serving in a brand new store, meeting residents, and working with the employees. “My promise is the company’s promise – to offer our customers the best possible quality, the best possible prices, and to make sure customers are satisfied,” said Egan added, “My goal is to make sure every customer leaves the store satisfied.”

In October 2015, the South Plainfield Planning Board unanimously approved Saker’s application to construct the supermarket in the Golden Acres Shopping Center. Over the year that followed, the property, which is owned by Michael Polimeni, underwent an extensive renovations. On the outside, the store's front façade and columns were constructed from brick and synthetic stucco was used on the upper portions while the vestibule features a glass canopy that runs along the outside of the building. Additionally, existing retail space at the site was demolished to create additional parking while new fencing, lighting, and landscaping was added and major parking lot reconfigurations were performed. Inside, the South Plainfield ShopRite is outfitted with the latest energy-saving and sustainable technologies in refrigeration and lighting, including glass doors on the dairy and freezer cases, LED and T-8 lighting, and environmentally friendly refrigerant systems.

Shop Rite of South Plainfield will employ more than 300 people (full- and part-time) and Anesh believes the additional jobs, combined with the aesthetic improvements made to the property and the increased tax revenue the store will generate, are all a win for the community.

“It’s a huge benefit for the town,” said Anesh. “We welcome Shop Rite to the borough with open arms.”

Effective Nov. 3, ShopRite of South Plainfield will open seven-days-a-week from 6 a.m. to midnight. For information, call (908) 561-2350.
