Three Indicted in New Brunswick Homicide

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that three men have been indicted by a grand jury in Middlesex County on charges of fatally shooting a New Brunswick man and wounding two others.

Rolando Martinez Sanchez, 24, Manuel Mendez, 23, and Renee Herrera, 30, all of New Brunswick, were indicted on Oct. 27 for the murder of Gregorio Hernandez, 28.

The defendants were also charged in the 23-count indictment with aggravated manslaughter, manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of a firearm for unlawful purposes. In addition, Sanchez and Mendez were charged with hindering their apprehension, witness tampering, and obstruction of the administration of law.

Sanchez was arrested Dec. 18, 2014 on charges of opening fire on a group of men sitting on the porch of a Hale Street home in New Brunswick May 18, 2014. Hernandez was not one of the intended targets but was struck and pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Two other men sitting with Hernandez were wounded during the shooting. One man was treated and released from a hospital. The other man suffered a wound to his finger, but declined treatment.

Sanchez remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail. Herrera was arrested yesterday in Edison and is also being held on $1 million bail. Bail for Mendez was set at $750,000 who surrendered to police yesterday.
