Tomaro Takes Reins as Middlesex Freeholder Deputy Director

Charles Tomaro was sworn in on Feb. 16 as deputy director of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — After roughly six years as a Middlesex County Freeholder, Charles Tomaro has been voted the board’s deputy director.

Tomaro, a Democrat from Edison, received the nod last night at the board’s meeting in New Brunswick. His ascension comes after the panel’s prior deputy director, Carol Bellante, resigned last month.

“The reason why we live in the greatest county,” Tomaro said after his nomination was approved, “is because of our men and women who come to work day in and day out.”

TAPinto New Brunswick first reported Tomaro’s likely rise to deputy director in January.

His seat is up for grabs in this year’s upcoming election.

Almost all of Tomaro’s speech was centered on county administrators and staffers, from the roads and engineering departments to parks and recreation workers.

“Thanks once again for making my job what it is and making it easy,” he said.

Tomaro took the oath of office with his family members by his side. Since Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios was absent from the meeting, Tomaro then went on to guide the board through the agenda.

Freeholder Charles Kenny praised Tomaro for his record of service.

“He is a very hard-working and dedicated public official who works very hard to meet the needs of the residents here in Middlesex County,” Kenny said.

Tomaro was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the board in 2011. He has since won two elections.

Tomaro joined the Edison Township Council in 1996. He has also served as council president, vice president and a Democratic committeeman.

After graduating from J.P. Stevens High School in Edison, Tomaro earned degrees from Middlesex County College and Rutgers University. Since 1986, he has worked for Clayton Block Co. in Edison, where he is a sales and marketing representative.

The freeholder notably took the oath of office for his second term in a hospital cafeteria after severely breaking his leg.

Last night's vote on Tomaro came after Monroe's Leslie Koppel was sworn into the board to replace Bellante.
