MIDDLESEX, NJ - A 38 year old Dunellen woman was struck and killed by a freight train Friday evening at a railroad crossing in Middlesex Borough, said police.

According to a Saturday news release, a Norfolk Southern train dispatcher called Middlesex Borough Police at 8:24 p.m. to notify them that a pedestrian was struck by a CSX freight train near the South Avenue railroad crossing.

Piscataway and Middlesex police officers responded to the scene and confirmed that a woman had been struck by the train and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s name was not released.

South Avenue was closed for eight hours while police conducted the investigation, said authorities.
