Dedicating the past 25 years to Piscataway Township, working in the Department of Public Works has been extremely rewarding for me. I have had the opportunity to learn first-hand what Piscataway residents want for our town. As I prepare to retire, I believe that the best volunteer service one can do, to give back to our community, is to serve on the Board of Education. We have a responsibility to provide a safe learning environment with the best educational opportunities for our children.
We live in uncertain times and my position working as a part-time Public Safety Officer at Union County College has given me both training and an understanding for what it takes to keep kids safe. There is room for improvement in our schools and on the campuses. My children graduated from Piscataway schools and now my grandchildren are currently enrolled in the Piscataway school system and making sure that they and their classmates are safe is my priority.
Getting the best education is a means for opening doors to a future that one can make their own. Quality education is vital. Having a well-rounded education which includes extra-curricular activities is essential. As a member of the Piscataway Board of Education I will work to bring new ideas to the Board. I will find ways to promote safety first and foremost, also ideas that will make all the students in Piscataway’s school system feel welcomed, included and excited to come to school each day.
Volunteering my time for my community is important to me. I have coached Piscataway’s Recreation Basketball for over 20 years. Served as a volunteer fireman for 14 years as Lieutenant, Captain and Chief of the Arbor Hose Company. I am now currently volunteering as an Assistant Coach, Assistant Athletic Director and serve on the Board of Plainfield Vikings American Youth Football (AYF) League where, along with my fellow coaches, we are forming a youth mentoring program for at-risk inner-city youth. I am also a Deacon-in-training at Second Baptist Church in Matawan. All these activities have prepared me to take on the important task of serving on the Board of Education and give me a unique perspective to share.
On Election Day, November 6th, please vote for better, safer schools. Together with Shelia Hobson and Nitang Patel we offer a new approach to tackling the hard decisions that need to be made to improve the Piscataway school system for the children, as well as the teachers and administrators. Please vote for me, Jeffrey Fields, Sr., along with my running mates, Shelia Hobson and Nitang Patel on column J.
Thank you for your consideration.
