Growing up, voting was always a priority in my household. As a family, we’d watch televised debates and were told how we were literally the first generation of voters in the family BORN with secured voting rights. I had a firsthand view of political activism with my grandmother and mother holding committee person positions in my hometown. These women in particular, “walked the walk” and that has and always will mean something to me.

Fast forward to 2020…in most of 2019 and the first few months of 2020, we were bombarded with the pre-presidential primary democratic debates on all of the news media platforms.  Friends and family alike would talk about our favorites, and the pros/cons of each.  And while, hugely important for the success and future of the nation, I am HUGELY invested in local elections on a personal level.  Local elections effect my day-to-day existence and immediately impact my daily life.

This local election in Piscataway is important, and the Dems on Our Side team --- Bill Irwin for Mayor, Kamuela Tillman, Ralph Johnson and Laura Leibowitz for town Council --- reflect what’s important to me:

1) transparency in government,

2) challenging township “norms” because the world is different than it was 20 years ago and

3) a track record of working with and engaging with different/diverse communities when no one is looking…not just for a vote or photo op.

Individually and collectively, this team has been consistently fighting for the regular, “unconnected” resident of Piscataway. They’ve all volunteered time to various initiatives/activities in town to help create and reinforce a sense of community in Piscataway, WAY before running for any sort of office. Bill, Kamuela, Ralph and Laura are simply a genuine group of Piscataway residents who want to see change in our local government, and I’m here for all of it! The Dems on Our Side team have moved beyond the “talking about it” stage and are fully on board with “being about it” stage of change.

Do I enjoy being a part of the Piscataway community?  Absolutely! Do I think we have room for improvement?  Absolutely!  Change is a necessary part of growth, and we must continue to grow and evolve at the local level.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – President Barack Obama
