When Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico over a year ago, Raíces Cultural Center started it’s PR Sustainable Disaster Relief Fund to aid in relief and recovery efforts of the sustainability and resiliency movements on the island. To date, between the organization’s own fundraising initiatives and through coalition work with other Central NJ organizations, Raíces has raised and helped to facilitate the donation of over $30,000 to organizations and individuals working for sustainable, renewable, resilient and just recovery for the island of Puerto Rico. Thanks to the generous donations of supporters, community members and organizations from Central NJ and beyond, Raíces has been able to make an impact in communities throughout the island.

Work that we have been able to fund through the efforts have included the purchase and installation of solar panels, distribution of thousands of seed packets to growers, famers and seed savers, roof repairs for farmers, installation of rainwater systems, greenhouse and animal enclosure repairs and installations for agro-ecological learning centers, and distribution of additional green relief supplies such as solar lamps, water filters, and tents for long-term volunteers.

This coming weekend, Raíces will hold the final event in our Raíces Roots Music Concert Series which has been part of the fundraising initiative. Community members have the opportunity to support continued relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts for the island of Puerto Rico, which is still struggling post-María over one full year later. Throughout 2018, performing artists, musicians and culture bearers from a wide diversity of cultures have come together to perform in this concert series and support Raíces Cultural Center’s PR Sustainable Disaster Relief Fund. From Brazilian Capoeira to Puerto Rican Jíbaro music to American Bluegrass, Central NJ artists and musicians have united across cultures to share their traditions while supporting Raíces’ efforts to make an impact on the island of Puerto Rico.
