PISCATAWAY, NJ – April is National Poetry Month. As we continue to practice social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, some Piscataway residents have found creative ways such as writing poetry to help them get through this challenging time.

TAPinto Piscataway reader, Rebecca Colby Reed Walker shared a poem she recently wrote to express her feelings during the COVID-19 crisis.

“Maybe it can help others who feel similarly to feel a bit more hopeful,” said Walker.

GATHERINGS by Rebecca Colby Reed Walker

Gather:  Come together, assemble, accumulate…

Bring together and take in from scattered places

               or sources…

It’s early morning

after a fitful sleep,

as I gather my thoughts

to try to make sense of the

sudden onslaught of

a new reality-

The corona virus.

My mind is bombarded,

as it attempts to find

places in my psyche

to put these circumstances-

to assimilate this situation-

so that I can orient myself

and find direction through this maze-

that seems like UNREALITY!

I find myself voraciously consuming the

news-

On my phone-

In the papers-

On the television-

In conversations with others.

People gather food

and survival supplies like squirrels

gathering acorns-

preparing for a long winter.

Is Armageddon coming???

Is this the END?

Is this really happening?

It seems like a bad dream.

I think of our large circle

of family and friends-

all of those that I love and care about…

Just a few weeks ago we gathered.

We fellowshipped.

I see the gatherings in my mind’s eye!

I see the celebrations of life!

I hear the voices of song and praise in church!

I hear the cheering at the boys’ basketball games!

I hear the singing of Happy Birthdays!

In my mind’s eye I hear my Dad singing a song

from his younger days, on a cherished visit!

I see my granddaughter showing us her karate moves-

and my grandsons dancing a rap in our living room!

I see us celebrating our history in February,

and also a special person, gone way too soon, at a funeral.

I remember the tears, and also the hugs.

I remember going to the movies!

-having lunch with friends!

-and special celebratory dinners!

Was that not so long ago?

I see love, joy, happiness and high fives!

I see tears sometimes…But we are together!

WHAT HAPPENED????

AND WHY NOW?????

The young ones are teaching the seasoned ones

about gathering apps-

like HouseParty and Zoom.

We search for each other online-

and smile and wave through screens-

finding any way to connect

with those whom we love and miss…

I want to see them

IN PERSON!

But I can’t!

Not now.

I try to get that

through my head…

“THIS IS OUR NEW REALITY.

THIS IS OUR NEW ‘TOGETHER’.

THESE ARE OUR NEW GATHERINGS…

LET THAT SINK IN!”

Every day we get new statistics

that have been gathered-

I SIGH.

We search for words of comfort-

prayers to soothe our spirits

and dry our tears.

We also see acts of sacrifice-

and the many good works of others

that help to ease the pain and suffering-

that is more manifest every hour of every day-

And I realize that THERE ARE STILL BLESSINGS!

It’s up to us to recognize and gather them-

to hold them, cherish them and thank God for them.

We must harness them for our sustenance!

We have to gather our blessings,

our love, our faith and our hope-

to survive.
