NEW JERSEY - Independence Day is on a Thursday this year and July 4 is a federal holiday, meaning all banks, government offices, the stock exchange and the United States Postal Service are closed. The Jersey Shore is of course open and hopeful for a lot of visitors for the Fourth of July, but the neighborhood garbage won't be picked up until July 5. Day camps get the day off as do schools that are open for summer classes. Don't worry though Garden State residents can still run on Dunkin. The popular coffee chain only closes on Christmas, but with the Fourth of July right around the corner what businesses and services are open and which ones are closed?

Most large grocery stores like ShopRite, Acme and Stop & Shop operate on regular hours though some like Whole Foods do close early to allow their employees to have Fourth of July fun too. Public libraries are closed, but large retail stores such as Target, Petco and Walmart are open as usual. Most malls are open for business too with July 4 sales in full swing, but a few malls like Brunswick Square in East Brunswick close early. Brunswick Square Mall is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 4.

Movies are a big July 4 activity and are open with regular showings on the holiday. "Spiderman: Far From Home" is the big July 4 draw this year. The movie opens with midnight showings on July 3. "Midsommar," a horror film, is the other new movie entering theaters for the July 4 holiday.

For folks hitting the road this Independence Day, airports and Amtrak are good to go as usual. New Jersey Transit though is operating on a weekend/holiday schedule for buses and trains on July 4.

Of course barbeques and picnics are the hot ticket on the Fourth of July, but for New Jerseyans looking to eat out, large restaurant chains like Piscataway Applebees where kids can eat for free on July 4th are open for regular hours. However, smaller eateries may or may not be open. If you want to head to a local eatery, bakery, coffee bar or shop on Independence Day, check the business' social media, website or call ahead to make sure it is open.
