SOMERVILLE, NJ - Despite a steady rainfall before and after the Girls on the Run Central NJ celebratory Fall 5K, over 900 runners completed the race through the streets of Somerville Sunday.

Runners represented GOTRCNJ coaches, program participants and an abundance of community support from the five counties served by GOTRCNJ.

Speaking at the event were Rosie Driscoll, representing the office of Sen. Robert Menendez, (D-NJ) and Somerville Mayor Dennis Sullivan.

“It’s a testament to the runner’s dedication to our Council that over 900 people, some traveling considerable distance, showed up given the rainy conditions,” said Donna York, executive director.

The 5K is the final of three races the GOTRCNJ Council holds annually. Net proceeds from the race will go to the GOTRCNJ Scholarship Fund, providing financial assistance to over 500 girls annually so they can participate in the program.

Race day volunteer support included the GOTRCNJ Advisory Board, Rutgers Gamma Phi Beta-Delta Mu Chapter, Gamma Phi Beta Alumni, Rutgers Omega Phi Alpha, Rutgers University Dance Team, Somerville High School and South Brunswick High School.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, social and emotional wellness program for girls in 3rd to 8th grade that inspires them to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through an evidence-based curriculum which includes dynamic discussions in self-esteem, self-confidence, competence and caring.

Over the course of the ten-week program the girls develop critical life skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.

Girls on the Run serves over 2,200 girls at 117 sites in Camden, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Somerset counties.
