PISCATAWAY, NJ — Construction is moving along on the long-awaited Piscataway community center which is expected to open in time for residents to enjoy during the summer of 2020, several months ahead of schedule, said township officials. It will also include an outdoor component with a pirate-themed spray park.
“It’s hard to fathom the progress that has been made by Terminal Construction when everybody was out here for the formal ground breaking last March,” said Mayor Brian Wahler at Saturday’s ground breaking ceremony for the spray park.
Originally planned as part of a future expansion project, the spray park is being built on the northwest corner of the Hoes Lane complex across from the Kennedy Library and Senior Center. For security reasons, it will only be accessible from inside of the community center, said Wahler.
“Due to the to economics that were involved in the construction and design of this building, we were able to come up with additional funds to build what will be arguably the largest spray park in the state of New Jersey,” said Wahler.
The large, pirate-themed spray park will have two open flume water slides, two spray cannons, a deck geyser and a large supersplash bucket connected to a ship’s bow surrounded by hose sprayers and arches, said township officials in an earlier news release. There will also be covered table seating areas and a building for restrooms.
“The system that is going to be installed to operate the spray park is a unique one,” said Wahler. “This one will have a reclamation system where no drop of water is going to get wasted except through evaporation. It’s a recycled system that’s going to send water back through the chlorine system that we’re using.”
When it opens, the community center, which will be run by the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy will include three swimming pools, basketball courts with an overhead running track, a fitness center, dance and art studios, a teen lounge, and men’s, women’s and family locker rooms and other amenities.
