PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway planning board officials gave the thumbs up for developers to move forward on a new WaWa and Hyatt House hotel to be built at the corner of Centennial Ave. and River Road on Wednesday.
Representatives for Piscataway Centennial Developers, LLC presented site plans outlining how the approximate 5-acre site will be configured to build the 5,580 square foot convenience store and gas station, and 4-story hotel off Exit 9 for Route 287.
Currently listed as 88 Centennial Ave, the long-vacant property was the former headquarters for WANDL, an international telecommunications firm. It is zoned as U-5 Light Industrial and is now considered an area in need of redevelopment.
“Wawa expects to hire 50-60 employees to cover all of the shifts for the 24-hour operation,” said Matthew Sharo, an engineer with Dynamic Traffic.
The 4-story Hyatt House hotel will have with 121 rooms and an outdoor patio, Sharo said, along with an indoor pool and a small kitchen area for breakfasts and light meals.
Site plans show that a wall will be built along the side of the property that borders Netherwood Ave. homes and LED lighting with special housings will be installed throughout the development, both designed for noise and light control. Evergreen shade trees also will be planted to help block lighting.
While some road improvements will be done to expand access to the new complex from both Centennial Ave. and River Road, Sharo said that construction will not “impact any easements already in place along either road or on the housing development side (Netherwood Ave.).”
When the businesses are open, traffic is expected to increase about 25% through the area, he explained, and except for deliveries, no tractor trailers will be allowed on the property.
“Low flow nozzles will be installed on diesel fuel pumps, and signage will be installed alerting trucks that they can’t fill up there,” said Sharo.
No word yet on when construction will begin.
