PARSIPPANY, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2018) –Thousands will walk to end pancreatic cancer, the world’s toughest cancer, at PurpleStride New Jersey on Nov. 11. The community event is hosted by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) New Jersey Affiliate.
Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. with a five-year survival rate of just 9 percent. In order to save lives and double survival by 2020, PanCAN urges people throughout New Jersey to join PurpleStride. Funds raised through the event support critical research, clinical initiatives and patient services, including Know Your Tumor®, Precision PromiseSM, Clinical Trial Finder and the Patient Registry.
Singer and reality TV star Erin Willett will also perform at the event. Willett, who lost her father to pancreatic cancer, was a semi-finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” and appeared on “The Biggest Loser.” She’s produced a new single, “Hope’s Alive,” to honor those affected by the disease, and 100 percent of the sales up to $1 million will benefit PanCAN.
PurpleStride New Jersey will take place at the Mack-Cali Business Campus, 1 Campus Drive, Parsippany and will be hosted by NBC 4 New York weather anchor Dave Price. The event is supported by National Presenting Sponsor Celgene, National Gold Sponsor AbbVie, National Gold Sponsor and Flagship Team Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., Gold Sponsor Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health, Gold Sponsor Atlantic Health System Cancer Care, and Gold Media Sponsor WFAN FM 101.9/WFAN 660 AM, WCBS 880 AM.
Franco Juricic, the Mission Chair for the affiliate, is approaching his tenth year as a survivor of pancreatic cancer. His father also was diagnosed with the disease and lost his battle in June of 2012. Juricic, a native of Highland Park, has used his story to raise hope for others facing a similar battle. He has shown determination in the years following his diagnosis, celebrating his critical five-year mark by running the New York City Marathon in November 2013.
Juricic has made it his personal mission to change the dire statistics.
“I want others to hear my story as a symbol for hope,” Juricic said. “The only way to improve outcomes and extend lives for others is through research, which comes at a cost. PurpleStride gives us the opportunity to raise the vital funds and awareness needed to tackle this disease and find a cure.”
