What’s the best food for a first birthday party? It was an enormous flatbread sandwich filled with mozzarella and imported prosciutto at a Tuscan-style café and bakery in New Jersey Sunday.

More than 500 people* partook of the schiacciata sandwich at Farinolio in Westfield to celebrate the business’s first anniversary, possibly breaking records for the largest sandwich of its kind in the process.

Eight people helped create the massive sandwich. Starting at 4 a.m., they baked flatbreads as big as would fit inside of Farinolio’s oven. After they were baked, the breads were carefully split and filled with slices from an entire Tuscan prosciutto and more cheese, tomatoes and basil than the owner could count.

(The thinly sliced ham was left off of some sections to provide a vegetarian option.)

“I really love this place,” said 10-year-old Christopher Winters of Westfield after he waited in line to get his piece of sandwich and a cookie for $5. “You can’t find it anywhere else, you know. It’s really good quality.”

The simple schiacciata flatbread was Italian-born co-owner Francesco Colbertaldo’s inspiration for Farinolio. The dough is made from just two ingredients — purified water and flour imported from Italy. It is flattened by hand before baking, leaving pockets along the top that hold the olive oil and salt that is added at the finish.

“When you use just two ingredients, you want to make sure they’re good ingredients,” Colbertaldo said. “And of course the there are skills of the baker, which makes it hard to replicate this.”
