NEWARK, NJ - A 43-year-old Indiana man was indicted today for attempting to have sex with a minor at a home in Franklin Township, according to U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito. 

Randal Wise, of Lebanon attempted to engage in sexual activity with a 14-year-old boy in the eighth grade. Wise sent messages via a dating app on October 25, 2019, according to Carpenito. 

"Unbeknownst to Wise, the individual was an undercover agent posing as a minor victim," Carpenito said in a news release. "Wise engaged in sexual conversations with the agent and sent photographs of his genitals to the agent. Wise also asked the agent to send nude photographs and invited the agent to his hotel room."

According to authorities, Wise contacted the agent the very next day via the dating app to meet in person at a residence in Franklin Township.

"When Wise arrived at the house, he was arrested by law enforcement agents," Carpenito said in a news release. 

The attempted online enticement of a minor charge carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years, a maximum potential penalty of life in prison, and a $250,000 fine.

Carpenito credited special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Gregory W. Ehrie in Newark, with the investigation leading to the indictment. He also thanked the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Prosecutor Michael Robertson, for its assistance.

According to police Wise, was among the 19 alleged child predators arrested late last year. Wise is an engineer for a sports television network. Charges are 2nd degree Luring, 2nd degree Attempted Sexual Assault, 3rd degree Attempted Endangering the Welfare of a Child and 3rd degree Attempt to Promote Obscene Material to a Child. Wise was previously convicted of sex assault, according to Robertson.
