SOMERVILLE, NJ – Two men have been charged with armed robbery and other related crimes in connection with a hold-up at a Verizon store on Route 22 in Green Brook, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, and Green Brook Township Chief of Police Christopher Kurz.

Police then chased and arrested suspects in Piscataway and South Bound Brook, but a third eluded capture and remains at large, said officials.

Arrested were Antwon Barksdale, 19, of Orange Avenue, Irvington, and Mario Cumberbatch, 22, of Vermont Street, Brooklyn, NY.

Robertson provided the following account:

A 911 call was received at 4:20 p.m., Jan. 27 by Green Brook police reporting the armed robbery at the Verizon store. Witnesses told police two men wearing ski masks, one with a gun, got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, left the store, and got in to a car driven by the third suspect.

The getaway vehicle was later located by Piscataway police in an area off of Old New Brunswick Road in Piscataway. One of the individuals, later identified as Barksdale, jumped out of the vehicle but was apprehended by Piscataway officers. The proceeds from the robbery were also located in the area by the Piscataway officers. 

A short time later, a South Bound Brook Police patrol officer saw the suspect vehicle; the two occupants stopped the vehicle and fled on foot.  One of the suspects, later identified as Cumberbatch, attempted to forcibly remove a driver from a nearby vehicle, but was stopped from doing so by police and was arrested.

Police continue to search for the third suspect, whose identity is unknown.

Barksdale is charged with first-degree armed robbery and second-degree conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Cumberbatch is charged with first-degree armed robbery, second-degree conspiracy to commit armed robbery, first-degree carjacking and second-degree eluding. Both defendants are lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
