PISCATAWAY, NJ — A section of Route 287 South in Piscataway was closed for several hours on Friday after a New Jersey State Trooper found human remains in the travel lanes north of Exit 8 for Centennial Ave. and Possumtown Road, said police officials.

The trooper, who was off-duty at the time discovered the remains at 3:24 pm. on the highway’s southbound side while driving through the area according to NJ Advance Media.

State police issued a travel alert via info@511nj.org at 3:39 p.m. and again at 4:14 p.m. advising motorists that the left lane was closed for “police department activity” and to expect delays through the area.

However, by their 5:54 p.m. update, all southbound lanes were closed between Exits 9 and 7 with detours in place, reopening several hours later.

No information was released as to the identity of the person or the condition of the remains. The case is under investigation.
