PISCATAWAY, NJ – Piscataway township joined many other communities across New Jersey and the nation for National Night Out, an event that promotes police and community partnerships with crime prevention goals to help make neighborhoods safer.
A section of Stelton Road from Westergard Library to Hopkinson Ave. near New Market Pond was blocked off for Tuesday night’s annual street party that featured crime prevention and safety exhibits, classic and sport cars, clowns and a free backpack giveaway including school supplies.
Mayor Brian Wahler, along with members of the township council, county freeholders and Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) thanked the community for participating, as a helicopter from the New Jersey State Police made a flyover and Piscataway police officers, firefighters and EMS squads greeted guests along the street.
Hell On Wheels, a traveling BMX stunt bike show got lots of ‘oohs and ahhs’ from the crowd with their gravity defying tricks, and on the main stage, members of the Piscataway Senior Center showed off their Tae Kwon Do skills while local fitness center, Burn Fitness, conducted Zumba performances.
To keep the community informed, local businesses, churches, and township commissions passed out brochures and promotional items with information on their services, and amusement park styled rides for the children were set up, including a fire hose water game to show how firefighters fight fires.
According to the NNO website, National Night Out is “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”
