SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Holy Savior’s will holds its annual May Crowning, a traditional Roman Catholic ritual honoring the Mary as ‘the Queen of Heaven and Earth’ on Thursday, May 16.
“May is the Month of Mary, our Mother. Our May Crowning is a way for our students and staff to honor Mary, our Mother, and to pray to her for Jesus’ blessings on all of us,”said Holy Savior Academy Principal Carol Woodburn.
This year’s May Crowning will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the school gymnasium with prayer and songs followed by a procession outside to the statue of Mary located in front of Sacred Heart Church. There, all will gather around the statue and the second graders, with assistance from the eighth grade students, will place a crown of flowers on her head.
“Many of our second graders have recently received their First Holy Communion,” said Woodburn, noting that for the May Crowning, they wear their Communion outfits as a sign of their purity and love and are joined by the school’s eighth graders who have recently been Confirmed as adult members of the church.
For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of Mary to honor Mary, Mother of God; the custom also spans cultures, with roots going back as far as the Ancient Greeks. Throughout the world, May Crownings are held during the month of May, paying tribute to the Virgin Mary with prayer services, song, processions, praying the rosary and crowning Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
