PISCATAWAY, NJ - Friends and neighbors, along with co-workers and former athletes and students, including Middlesex County Freeholder Kenneth Armwood are remembering the life of Larry Lester, a beloved Piscataway High School teacher and coach who passed away on Monday.
In a Facebook post, Armwood wrote:
“It's a sad day in Pway. Today we lost a giant of a man, Mr. Larry Lester. Mr. Lester was a teacher at Piscataway High School and also a football and track coach. Most of all Mr. Lester was a role model and advocate for all students.
I remember how during timeouts, he would run out on the field and provide a reassuring calm in the huddle, in his staccato speech pattern. Then he would leave with a thunderous "love tap" on your helmet, always motivating us to be better.
He had a great sense of humor and would find humor in your bad haircut or joke about your new relationship. Most of all, I'll always remember the love and care he displayed with students when discussing difficult topics or the numerous issues of being a teenager.
Rest in Peace Mr. Lester. Thank you for being a father-figure and mentor to the thousands of young people who crossed paths with you. I pray that I can have half the impact on the young people with whom I work as you had on us. Thanks for believing ‘L’!”
