TAPintoTravels - For the Township of Edison, Sunday was a historic anniversary.  It was the birthday of Thomas Alva Edison.

Most people may not be aware that Edison was named in honor of the famous inventor.

From his main laboratory in the Menlo Park section of town, Edison invented such revolutionary products as the the phonograph, a stock ticker, the incandescent light-bulb, the alkaline storage battery for an electric car, and a mechanical vote counter.  If your children do not recognize any of these inventions, just tell them that he invented the precursor of iTunes, Coinbase, LED lights, Tesla’s batteries, and the device that the Russians tried to hack last year.  They should get all that.

Like all things Jersey, Edison Township has had an interesting journey too.

Officially, it did not exist as Edison until November 10, 1954.  It had been formerly part of Raritan Township beginning in March 17, 1870.  The area that became Raritan Township was made from portions of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships.  Portions of Raritan were cleaved off to form Metuchen in 1900 and Highland Park in 1905.  The final footprint of what would be Edison were in place.

You clearly have to be as intelligent as Edison to understand that evolution.

Today, Edison is a gem of New Jersey.  She has earned numerous awards including:

  • 28th most-livable small city in the U.S. by CNN Money Magazine 2006
  • 2nd in New Jersey for “Best Places to Live” 2006 by Money Magazine
  • U.S. News & World Report 2009 “America’s 10 Best Places to Grow Up”
  • Money Magazine’s 2008 Top 100 Places to Live in the U.S. (35th)
