NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — One woman died early this morning in a house fire on Stockton Road, according to police.
Loretta Katko, a 73-year-old woman, was found dead in a bedroom of her 29 Stockton Rd. home after New Brunswick firefighters and police responded to a call around 12:44 a.m., June 28, cops said.
“Upon their arrival heavy smoke was observed pushing out from the eaves of the structure,” New Brunswick Police Capt. J.T. Miller wrote in a news release.
Firefighters battled “heavy fire” inside the house, which sustained “extensive damage” to the first and second floors, police said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to police. But, the department noted, it doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
Stockton Road connects Tunison and South Pennington roads. It’s near the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.
