Willow Grove Church in Scotch Plains is inviting the community to shop at their Alternative Gift Fair on Sunday November 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Alternative Gift Fairs are a way to promote the gift-giving tradition of the holiday season without the wastefulness of conventional shopping.
Alternative gifts prioritize meaning over materials—they may include charitable donations, fair trade gifts items, or favorite homemade baked items. Whether for one person or a dozen people, shopping at the Alternative Gift Fair is a fun and inspiring way to celebrate the holidays.
Charities represented are local, national, and global. YWCA Center for the Prevention of Domestic Violence provides shelter, legal services, and emotional support for battered women. Heifer International pairs impoverished villages both in the United States and abroad with animals to build sustainable economies. The Church World Service Jersey City office resettles Syrian refugee families into local communities
To add to charitable gift giving, shoppers can also purchase a wide variety of fair trade gift items from Ten Thousand Villages as well as fair trade coffee, tea, and chocolates from Equal Exchange. There will also be a bake sale to shop for many holidays favorite baked goods such as sugar cut-out cookies with homemade buttercream frosting, pumpkin muffins, mini loaves, and much more.
For shoppers’ convenience, cash or credit cards will be accepted and gift wrapping will be available for fair trade gift items. Many levels of purchases are offered to be appropriate for family and friends, teachers’ gifts, and stocking stuffers.
