For visitors to the area, Bocchino's exhibit wlll continue at ArtHaus through June 30, with copies of her book will be available through that time. This week, she invited local residents who are visiting or have relocated to the Bay Area to attend the reception, or to drop by the exhibit.

Previous exhibit and book signing in Bernardsville

Bocchino held an exhibit of her work about a year ago at Gallery W in Bernardsville, where she also signed copies of her book and met with area artists and art fans.

Although Bocchino's work has been exhibited all over the world, including a number of displays of her "Fever" series throughout New Jersey in recent years, she is also active with promoting the arts locally - particularly for young people.

Each year, Bocchino coordinates an art show at the Somerset Hills YMCA to inspire and provide a forum for young artists, and to honor her late mother, artist Lucia Bocchino.

Somerset Hills YMCA art contest for show underway now

"Who Inspires You?," the art contest for kindergarten through grade 12 artists, is underway now at the Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge, with submissions to be accepted through Friday, April 21.

The artwork will be displayed at the Somerset Hills YMCA between Monday, April 24 and Saturday, May 13. Further information, including details about submissions, is on the Somerset Hills website.

The "Who Inspires You?" art awards ceremony, followed by art pickup by the artists, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon on May 13. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Bocchino started the annual event and the Lucia Bocchino fund  in memory of Lucia Bocchino, artist, mother and wife, and "to encourage young artists in the early stages of their lives."  She is executive director of the fund.

Bocchino to lead art workshop at YMCA this Saturday

Before she leaves for California, Bocchino has scheduled an art workshop for 10 a.m. to noon on this Saturday, April 1, at the YMCA's main facility at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge.

The "Creativity is Contagious" painting and drawing workshop is open to both members and non-members of the YMCA.

The class fulfills requirements for the Girl Scout Junior Drawing Badge (included). Contact Erika Lewin
for registration at 908-766-7898, x540, or email scoutcoordinator@somersetcountyymca. Further information is on the YMCA website

Involvement with other local arts organizations

Bocchino is also enmeshed in the local arts community for adults. She has contributed her work to in shows at the Farmstead Arts in Basking Ridge, and has been an active member and exhibitor at the Center For Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Bedminster.

Bocchino's profile on the YMCA website said she has a Master’s Degree from New York University and has received recognition from New York City’s Artists Space, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Additionally, she has received fellowship grants from the Pollock- Krasner Foundation and The Brodsky Center for Innovative Print and Paper. Her work is represented in public, private and corporate collections around the world.

Bocchino began exhibiting her work in 1986 in the East Village in New York City, when she was chosen by Susan Rothenberg for an Artist Chose Artists Exhibition at the Jus de Pomme Gallery in New York City, according to a release from ArtHaus. The success of that exhibition lead to many other exhibitions across the country.

Bocchino was awarded a studio residency at PS1 (now PS1 MOMA) in 1987, the release said. During that international studio program, The Vice Prime Minister of Italy invited Bocchino to have her first international exhibition in Rome, Italy. The catalogue was written by international art writer and critic Laura Cherubini and Manuela Gandini. During the next few years, Bocchino was awarded a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, An Artists Space Award, the Basil Alkazzi Award and Art Matters award. Subsequent exhibitions in New York were well received with reviews in the New York Times, Village Voice and The New Yorker Magazine.

Between 1988-2009, five films were created about Bocchino and her painting process, and aired on PBS and at the Museum of Modern Art, and elsewhere, the release said.

You Meet the Most Amazing People on the Trail

The weather cooperated this weekend, so I went for more than one hike. After all, there are only just over fifty days before my walk to Maine commences, so why not.

This Saturday, some friends dragged me away from housecleaning (thank you!) for a quick jaunt through Watchung Reservation.  While we were there, we ran into two individuals from Westfield; the cosplayers introduced themselves ...

Empleando Nuestra Juventud

Querido Plainfield,

Todos esperan el verano; los días son más calientes y largos, y la madre tierra se pone su mejor vestido mientras las frutas se maduran en el sol y las flores ondean un alegre "hola". The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani, a New York Times best selling author, was recommended to me by a young woman who actually came from the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, the place where the novel is set. “The author did such a wonderful job of describing how the town actually is,” said the young lady.
