NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Michael “Mickey” Allocco of New Providence passed away at his home on Wedneday, December 4, 2019 at age of 94.

The visitation will be held at Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave., Summit, NJ on Sunday, Dec. 8th, from 2-6 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to go directly to Our Lady of Peace Church, 111 South St., New Providence, NJ to celebrate the Funeral Mass on Monday, Dec. 9th, at 10 AM followed by the entombment at St. Teresa’s Mausoleum, Summit. He was a 67-year member of the New Providence Fire Department. He became Fire Chief in 1965 and served as Fire Inspector from 1982 to 2000. During his tenure in the Fire Department, Mickey held the offices of President, Vice President, Financial Secretary, Assistant Forman, Forman, Second Assistant Chief, and Chief.  In honor of the many years of service to the community the Borough of New Providence re-named the street entering the Fire Department “Mickey Allocco Way” in 2017.

In addition to his service to the Fire Department, Mickey was a longtime parishioner and volunteer at Our Lady of Peace Church, serving as past-president of the PTA at Our Lady of Peace. He was a dedicated volunteer supporting the cause to beatify Sr. Miriam Teresa at St. Elizabeth’s in Convent Station and was a former treasurer at Barabash Manor in New Providence. Mickey was a longtime member of the New Providence Booster Club and an avid supporter of all New Providence athletics.   He was also a member and past-president of the New Providence Senior Citizens Club.

Mickey was born in Madison, NJ to the late Anna (nee Piero) and Jerry Allocco and had resided in New Providence for the past 73 years. He was a US Coast Guard veteran, serving during World War II from 1942-45. Mickey was employed as a courier for Allstate Insurance Co. in Murray Hill, NJ for 18 years before retiring in 1987. Earlier he had been employed as diamond reclaimer at JK Smit in New Providence.

He was an avid golfer, a great puzzle maker, and a longtime umpire for the men’s softball league in New Providence. He always waited patiently for Saturday afternoons in the fall when he could watch his beloved Notre Dame football team play.

Mickey’s greatest love was for his family. His is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Theresa Allocco (nee Cirelli) of New Providence; his loving sons, Jerry (Linda) Allocco of New Providence, Michael (Carlene) Allocco, Jr. of South Plainfield, Frank (Phyllis) Allocco of Concord, CA and Richard Allocco of Danville, CA; his cherished grandchildren, Tracy Keegan, Mary Stoddard, Joseph Allocco, Michael Allocco, III, Ashley Wilson, Courtney Allocco, Kristen Gray, Frank Allocco, Michael Allocco, and Megan Hansen and 14 great-grandchildren. He is the dear brother of Ann Fuschetti of Madison, Joseph (Sue) Allocco of Mendham, Larry (Nancy) Allocco of Chatham, the late Anthony (Sheila) Allocco of Madison, Pauline Troianello, Genevieve Allocco, and Vincent Allocco. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends and will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
