Washington, DC – May 25, 2017 - U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement on the release of Trump’s FY2018 budget this morning:
“President Trump’s budget is littered with broken promises that will directly harm working families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Its savage cuts will not only hurt millions of Americans, it will stifle America’s economic growth and competitiveness and undermine our national security.
“During his campaign, Trump promised that there would be ‘no cuts’ to Social Security, but this budget cuts billions from Social Security Disability Insurance, hurting those who can’t work due to their disability and undermining the Social Security safety net. He also promised that there would be ‘no cuts’ to Medicaid, but his budget breaks that promise too, cutting billions and eliminating health coverage for 10 million Americans over the next decade. The list goes on with broken promise after broken promise.
“Trump’s budget also guts proven investments that fuel economic growth, such as education programs, scientific research, and infrastructure improvement. He contradicts widespread views held among our defense and intelligence communities and slashes funding for diplomacy and foreign aid. This budget wreaks havoc on proven anti-poverty programs. And it even ends funding for Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity — cuts that even some on the far right say go too far.
“Gutting programs that work isn’t the way to strengthen America. It’s shortsighted, craven, and will end up costing the American people much more in the long run.”
